Mindfulness is practiced in different ways to support different functions.  At its core, mindfulness is freedom of mind we develop in order to recognize “what is” without thinking about “what is.”

Vary how you focus on the object of your attention
“What is this?” can tilt us in the direction of insight.

A simple question like “What is this?” can tilt us in the direction of insight… if we observe our thoughts lightly… and engage our assumptions and beliefs loosely.
